How alternate side parking works

Alternate side parking lets street sweepers reach the curb. Each block has street-cleaning signs — a broom symbol with days and hours — and each side of the street usually has its own. During that window you can’t park on that side, even if the sweeper has already passed. The rule ends at the time on the sign.

Reading your sign

A sign like “8:30AM–10AM TUES & FRI” means two cleanings a week on that side. “Except Sunday” signs repeat every day from Monday to Saturday, usually for 30 minutes. The other side of the street almost always has different days, which is why the tool asks for the side. We group the city’s 194,955 current broom signs by street, block and side, so the tool shows exactly what is posted on your block.

How to read a sign

  1. The hoursYou can’t park on this side during this window.
  2. The daysTwo days here means two cleanings a week.
  3. Your sideThe other side of the street almost always has different days.

Example wording. Your own sign is what counts.

Fines, Sundays and holidays

A missed move costs $65 in every borough — the city made the street-cleaning fine the same everywhere in February 2020, so older guides quoting $45 are out of date. There’s no alternate side parking on Sundays, and on the 42 holiday suspension days in 2026 you can stay put. Meters are suspended only on major legal holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

When the sign and our tool disagree

Follow the sign. City records can lag a new sign by weeks. If you spot a difference, tell us and we’ll pass it on.

Quick answers

Is alternate side parking in effect on Election Day?

No. Tuesday, November 3, 2026 is a suspension day in the NYC DOT 2026 calendar. Parking meters stay in effect.

Do I have to move my car if the street sweeper already came?

Yes. The rule lasts for the full time on the sign, whether or not the sweeper has passed. You can be ticketed until the posted end time.

Is alternate side parking suspended when it snows?

Only if the city announces it. The decision can come late in the day, and a storm can keep rules suspended for weeks. Weather and emergency suspensions are not in the calendar — check NYC 311 or Notify NYC.

What is the ticket for alternate side parking?

$65 anywhere in the city (NYC Department of Finance, violation code 21 — the same in every borough since February 2020). How to fight it.

Is there alternate side parking on Sundays?

No. There is no alternate side parking on Sundays anywhere in the five boroughs, and parking meters are not in effect on Sundays.

How many days is alternate side parking suspended in 2026?

42 days, all listed in the calendar on this page. On 7 of them parking meters are suspended as well.
