Car log: when are the oil change and tire rotation due?

Your oil change and tire rotation are due at whichever comes first, the miles or the months in your owner’s manual. NHTSA gives 5,000 to 8,000 miles for rotation if your maker recommends it, but your manual decides. Enter your last service below, and this page works out the date and adds it to your calendar.

Where the numbers come from

From your car. We don’t suggest an oil change interval, because it depends on the engine, the oil and how you drive, and the owner’s manual says what applies. Enter what it says, in miles and in months. The log uses the miles you drive each week to turn miles into a date, then shows whichever comes first.

Tires

NHTSA says to check your owner’s manual for how often to rotate and which pattern to use. If the manufacturer recommends it, rotate every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, or sooner if uneven wear appears. For some vehicles rotation isn’t recommended, and if the front and rear tires are different sizes you may not be able to rotate them. Check pressure at least monthly, when the tires are cold.

Winter

NHTSA’s winter list: have a mechanic check the battery, charging system and belts. Keep each tire at the pressure on the door label, not the number on the tire, since pressure drops with the temperature. Test the defrosters and wipers. Carry a shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, blankets, water and a phone charger. Keep the gas tank close to full.

Registration, inspection and insurance

Rules differ by state, so we don’t guess. Copy the dates from your own documents, and the calendar file will warn you two weeks ahead.
